Different Paving Styles (Part 1: Basic Pavers)

Paving Guy mostly manufactures its own paving concrete designs and pavers at its factory in Klerksdorp, allowing us to have a variety of designs that adds beauty to your home and garden, we also supply a range of traditional products that we source from our suppliers, these are mostly basic paver ranges.

We thought it would be good to provide a bit of an overview of different options available to customers in regards to the different paving options, both from our own range as well as traditional pavers found in the market.

Basic Pavers

Starting at the basic pavers that are most often used at customer premises for driveways, parking, sidewalks and such, these pavers are referred to as Bonded Bricks and is a functional and practical paver range that if installed correctly and with dead straight lines do have a good look and from a budget perspective is the lowest price units.

Bondbrick Range

This is the traditional paver for economy and durability. Available in a variety of colours and thicknesses, ranging from 50mm thick to 100mm for heavy traffic areas, Suitable for parking areas, pathways, commercial and domestic surfaces. The size of this brick is 200x100 and you require about 50 bricks per square meter. The colours available normally are Grey, Slate, Terracotta, Plum, Tan and Autumn.

Within this range you also find "Cobble Bond", which provides a cobble effect and a strong interlocking capacity, it is a single brick with a bevelled line across, creating a central groove and therefore a cobble effect.

Similar to the Cobble Bond above, you also have the Double Bond, which also has a central groove beveled across to create a cobble effect, the difference being that the Double Bond has a "smoother" profile than that of the Cobble Bond above.

Despite thee pavers being well known in the market and of standard design over an extended period of time, the installation of these do not have to be seen as non value adding and the effect remains one that will provide a quality feel for a long time into the future.

The laying patterns that could be achieved with these pavers also creates a range of alternative looks to the paver range, an example of such laying patterns can be seen below, but you can experiment with a range of patters and designs through colour and texture combinations.

Cottage Stone

One of our favourites amongst the standard range of Pavers the Cottage Stone Paver measures 200x150, requiring approximately 33 pavers per square meter of paving, and similar to the Bond bricks above comes in a variety of colours to suite your specific style and taste. Domestic driveways, municipal parking areas, pedestrian pavements, pathways & commercial developments. These pavers looks modern and is aesthetically pleasing.

Deckwerk

A three dimensional interlocking block paver that has proved to be a superior surfacing in many applications. With the use of mechanical interlocking blocks, the scope of suitable applications is made even wider. Measuring 240x240 approximately 17 units will be required per square meter of paving area, units are 100mm in thickness.

These units are designed to interlock, horizontally and vertically thus are perfect for applications such as flexible concrete linings, storm water channels, spillways, extra heavy duty pavements and settling ponds.

The standard colour is grey, although other colours are available on special request and dependent on quantities required.

Advantages of mechanical interlocking blocks: Maintains integrity with surrounding blocks / any ground settlements will not dislodge an individual block / resists uplift forces when used in channels or in sludge drying areas / security against uplift by non authorized persons is greatly improved / load transfer is direct from block to block and not via the jointing sand alone, jointing sand is less susceptible to blow out or wash out / added resistance to uplift on steep slopes.

Double Zig-Zag

Interlocking pavers form a continuous, hard wearing surface overlay; engineered elegance, both economical and appealing. Versatile Double Zig-Zag® pavers are available in a variety of colours and ideally suited to the construction of heavy duty industrial areas, roadways, depots and commercial applications.

Permeable Paving

Aqua Trojan Slab ®, Square ® & Aqua Zig-Zag ® Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) are increasingly being used to prevent run-off and flooding, and as a method of collecting and cleaning storm water.

These units allows heavy rain to infiltrate through a permeable concrete block paved surface into a unique sub-base before being released in a controlled manner into sewers or water courses.

The problem

Increasing urbanisation and rapid run-off have put a tremendous strain on conventional storm water drainage systems. This has resulted in sewers and culverts becoming overloaded during periods of heavy rain and contamination of streams and rivers.

Heavy metals, hydrocarbons, rubber dust, silts and other detritus are all deposited on impermeable surfaces during dry weather. These are scoured of such surfaces during periods of heavy rain and transported at best into expensive treatment works, or directly into rivers and streams where they cause severe environmental damage.

The solution – Source control

Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) are increasingly being used to prevent run-off and flooding, and as a method of collecting and cleaning storm water.

The Technicrete sustainable urban drainage system allows heavy rain to infiltrate through a permeable concrete block paved surface into a unique sub-base before being released in a controlled manner into sewers or water courses.

Discharge rates as low as 2.5 litres/ hectare per second are easily achieved. Alternatively if the underlying subgrade is suitable the water can be infiltrated directly into the subgrade.

A further advantage of the system is that roof water can be drained directly onto the subbase via a rodable sump, or if siphonically drained, through a dispersion chamber.

Suitability

The sustainable urban drainage systems and Aquaflow permeable paving products are suitable for use on: Car parks, Industrial estates, Retail centres, Pedestrian areas, Domestic drives, Motorway services, Airport service areas and aprons, Garages, Truck stops, Container terminals and other heavy duty applications.

Paving Guy Quality

In terms of quality of Paving Guy products we aim to adhere to best practices and therefore our level of measurements are based on industry best practices, guidelines and specifications, some of these are referenced below.

The units as supplied shall be free from cracks that detract from their general appearance. At the point of manufacture no unit shall have any chip of dimension exceeding 15 mm or covering more than 3% of the periphery of the surface that is intended to be exposed. No units shall have any protuberance of height exceeding 3 mm.

The surface texture and colour of the units shall fall within the range of texture and colour represented

by the manufacturer’s approved samples. The colour shall penetrate to a depth of at least 5 mm below the wearing surface of each unit and the coloured layer shall be integrally bound to the body of the unit.

Colour Various block manufacturers use trade names to describe the colour of their blocks. Basic pigment

colours are black, brown, red and tan. Reference samples showing range of colours agreed upon should

be kept by purchaser. Non-pigmented blocks also may vary in colour due to cement and aggregate colour variation.

Texture The texture of blocks varies, depending on the manufacturing operation and the materials used. Smoother blocks are aesthetically more pleasing while rougher blocks provide better skid resistance. The texture should be consistent and reference samples approved.

Sand for Bedding and Jointing: Sand for bedding and jointing shall be free from substances that may be deleterious to blocks. In addition, the grading of the sand shall conform to that given in a) or b) below, as applicable, except that, where evidence satisfactory to the engineer has been provided to the successful previous use of sand having another grading, sand of such other grading may be used.
